Dollar General Community Grant

Dollar General’s community grants provide support for non-profit organizations committed to the advancement of youth initiatives. These initiatives address some of the greatest challenges students face in the company’s market area.

Eligible organizations are non-profit/charitable organizations engaged in literacy programs for youth located in Dollar General’s 33 state operating territory, and within 20 miles of the nearest Dollar General Store.

Applications must be submitted by March 5, 2007or June 5, 2007. Click here for more info.

Grant Tip of the Month

Volunteers

One of the best assets that a community can offer a program is the time provided by volunteers. Many grant writers fail to recognize the impact of this contribution during budget preparations. Volunteers are considered in-kind or local contributions.

The Independent Sector is an organization that calculates the hourly value of volunteer time. This can be located at www.independentsector.org

UPCOMING DEADLINES

Free computer lab, software, and site licenses for tech-savvy teachers

The 2006 Knowledge Adventure Teacher Awards Program is an essay competition open to K-12 educators who are using technology to help students excel in the classroom. Educators must complete an online entry form, which includes a brief essay on how the nominee is using technology to help his or her students succeed in their academic endeavors. Each month, through January 2007, a panel will select a Teacher of the Month to receive $400 in Knowledge Adventure software. In January, the Teacher of the Year will be chosen from all of the essays submitted. The Teacher of the Year receives a brand new computer lab consisting of eight computers, a complete library of Knowledge Adventure software, and training.

Allstate Foundation

The Allstate Foundation provides funds in a variety of areas which include economic empowerment, education, tolerance, diversity, inclusion, and vital and safe communities.

Lowe’s Outdoor Classroom Grant Program

Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation, International Paper and nation Geographic Explorer! classroom magazine have partnered to create an outdoor classroom grant program to provide schools with additional resources to improve their science curriculum by engaging students in hands-on experiences outside the traditional classroom. The Outdoor Classroom Grant Program provides outdoor, hands-on science education to students in grades K-12 and assists schools in enhancing their core curriculum in all subjects.

All K-12 public schools in the United States are welcome to apply.

The program will award grants up to $2,000 to at least 100 schools. In some cases, grants for up to $20,000 may be awarded to schools or school districts with major outdoor classroom projects. Every applicant will receive, at no cost, International Paper’s Life of the Forest Classroom Kit. The kit, which contains 10 full-color posters, 10 teaching guides and 20 booklets, can be used in classrooms at the teacher’s discretion.

Online applications will be reviewed three times per year. Decisions on applications submitted by December 31 will be made by mid-January, 2007.

Gannett Foundation

The Gannett Foundation is a corporate foundation sponsored by Gannett Co., The Foundation’s mission is to invest in the future of the communities in which Gannett does business, and in the future of its industry. The Foundation is particularly interested in projects that take a creative approach to fundamental issues such as education and neighborhood improvement, economic development, youth development, community problem-solving, assistance to disadvantaged people, environmental conservation and cultural enrichment.

Each local Gannett operation establishes its own priorities, depending upon local needs, and may have its own guidelines and restrictions. If your organization is located in one of the Gannett communities, contact them to learn about their priorities, restrictions, and deadlines.

Grants are made to nonprofit organizations in the communities in which Gannett owns a daily newspaper or television station. (Gannett operates in select areas in AL, AZ, AR, CA, CO, CT, DC, DE, FL, GA, HI, IL, IN, IA, KY, LA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MO, MS, MT, NC, NJM NV, NY, OH, OK, OR, SC, SD, TN, UT, VA, VT, WI, and WV) Elementary and secondary schools are eligible for funding for special initiatives or programs not provided by regular school budgets.

In general, short proposals (5 pages or less) should be submitted to your local daily newspaper or television station by no later than January 15, May 15, or August 15. You should, however, check with your local Gannett-owned media to verify its deadlines.

Heads up! Champions for Healthy Kids

Grant application for the General Champions for Healthy Kids program will be available on December 1, 2006.

The goal of the General Mills Champions for Healthy Kids grants is to encourage communities in the United States to improve the eating and physical activity patterns of young people, ages 2-20. Grants will be awarded to nonprofit organizations and agencies working with communities that demonstrate the greatest need and likelihood of sustainable impact on young people’s nutrition and activity levels through innovative programs.

Each year, the Foundation awards 50 grants of $10,000 each to community-based groups (including public schools) that develop creative ways to help youth adopt a balanced diet and physically active lifestyle.
