Hasbro Children’s Foundation

The Hasbro Children’s Foundation values programs that directly serve children, from birth to age 12.  The foundation funds programs within three major areas:

  1. Innovative programs with local impact -
    The foundation will provide small grants to expand local direct service programs for children in need.

  2. National replication / adaptation / expansion of innovations -
    The foundation can make larger-sometimes multi-year-grants for innovative direct service programs that can replicate working programs to more communities.

  3. Innovative programs with national impact -
    The foundation provides seed grants to innovative new programs that propose to support vulnerable children and their families and improve children’s lives in communities nationwide.

Most grant awards range between $500 and $35,000.  Consideration for 2005 began Oct. 15, 2004 and continues through Oct. 14, 2005.

The foundation accepts letters of inquiry on an outgoing basis.  Letters should contain pertinent information on the proposal, including, among other items:

  • your organization’s name, address, telephone, fax, and contact person with title;

  • your organization’s mission statement;

  • the name and location(s) for the actual project;

  • the need your project expects to meet and what makes your project innovative; and

  • a description of the project under consideration.

It may take three months before you hear whether your project will be funded.  Most grant awards range between $500 and $35,000.  Consideration for 2005 funding began Oct. 15, 2004, and continues through Oct. 14, 2005.

April’s Showers Should Bring Flowers

Instead of sending students out to raise money for school programs with a box of grade B candy bars, or a catalogue offering overpriced knick-knacks and scented candles, try involving them selling bulbs that will produce beautiful tulips, daffodils, or hyacinths.  The National Garden Association endorses the Dutch Bulb fundraiser, which enables participants to earn 50 percent of the profits.  And, for contributors, each bulb order comes with instructions for planting and care.

A free fundraising kit is available with brochures, collection envelopes, a chairperson checklist, and a master order sheet.  To find out more, call (888) 838-1093, or visit http://www.dutchgardens.com/CustomerService/fundraising.asp .

Nike and Mike extend the Jordan Fundamentals Grant Program

Michael Jordan and Nike started the Jordan Fundamentals Grant Program in 1999 to recognize excellent teaching in public secondary schools that served economically disadvantaged students.

Up to 400 grants of $2,500 each will be awarded each year: 200 grants in grades 1 through 6; and 200 grants in grades 7 through 12.

The program, administered by Scholarship America, has recently expanded to include grades 1 through 6.

Applicants must be public school teachers of grades 1 through 12 in an accredited school where at least 50 percent of the student population receives free or reduced price lunches.  Applicants must develop an original lesson or thematic unit with high expectations for students.  Students may be involved in this plan or unit, which may not come from a commercial package.

Up to 400 grants of $2,500 each will be awarded each year:

200 grants in grades 1 through 6; and 200 grants in grades 7 through 12.  Awards may be used for materials, supplies, equipment, transportation, software, or other items necessary to the implementation of the proposal.  The deadline of applications is June 15, 2005.  Responses should be limited to three pages with 12-point font size, one-inch margins, and double spacing.  Scholarship America will select the finalists, and a committee of teachers will select the Jordan Fundamentals grant recipients from the finalists.
