Project RESSPECT

Project Resspect is an acronym for Resource for Enhancing Student Social Proficiencies and Empowering Classroom Teachers.  Project RESSPECT will teach students the social skills necessary for getting along with teachers, staff, other students, parents, and community members.

The following are the skills taught by month at Sam Houston.

September
Lifeskill:  Respect
RESSPECT:  Saying no
1.  Have a plan for where you want to be and what you want to do.
2.  When someone suggests doing something that you don't want to do, say "no" and invite that        person to join you in the activity you have planned.
3.  Whatever the other person's answer, you stick to your plan.
4.  Leave the situation and do what you had planned to do.

October
Lifeskill:  Responsibility
RESSPECT:  Accepting correction
1.  Look at the person giving correction.
2.  Listen without interrupting.
3.  Repeat what the person told you.
4.  Tell what you will do now.
5.  Do not argue.

November
Lifeskill:  Cooperation
RESSPECT:  Communicating anger appropriately
1.  Get the person's attention appropriately.
2.  Talk calmly.
3.  Say "I feel angry because..."
4.  Tell what you need to calm down.
5.  Listen to the person.

December
Lifeskill:  Caring
RESSPECT: Requesting
1.  Get the person's attention.
2.  Say "please" and tell exactly what you want.
3.  Give a short reason.
4.  Accept the answer and say "thank you".

January
Lifeskill:  Courage
RESSPECT:  Interrupting appropriately
1.  Decide if you need to talk to the person now.
2.  Say, "please excuse me for interrupting."
3.  Be brief.
4.  Say, "Thank you for allowing me to interrupt."
5.  Leave right away.

February
Lifeskill:  Patience
RESSPECT:  Getting the teacher's attention
1.  Think about what you want to say.
2.  Look at the teacher.
3.  Signal appropriately.
4.  Remain calm.
5.  Wait for the teacher to say your name.
6.  Be ready to speak right away.

March
Lifeskill:  Problem Solving
RESSPECT:  Disagreeing appropriately
1.  Look at the person.
2.  Use a calm voice.
3.  Say, "you told me..."
4.  Say,  "I would like to disagree."
5.  Tell why you want to disagree and what you want instead.
6.  Listen and accept the answer.

Lifeskill:  Effort
RESSPECT: Accepting No for an answer
1.  Look at the person who is talking.
2.  Remain calm.
3.  Say, "Okay, thank you."
4.  Go to an appropriate activity.

May
Lifeskill:  Integrity
RESSPECT: Following an Instruction
1.  Look at the person giving the instruction.
2.  Acknowledge the instruction.  (Say yes ma'am, yes sir, or nod your head)
3.  Begin immediately or as instructed.
