McAllen ISD to Apply for School
Repair and Renovation Grant
In mid-September, the McAllen Independent School
District plans to apply for a federal grant for approximately $750,000 to
$900,000 to repair and/or renovate its school buildings. The funds may be used to repair, replace
or install roofs, electrical wiring, plumbing systems, or sewage systems; to
repair, replace or install heating, ventilation, or air conditioning systems
(including insulation); or to bring schools into compliance with fire and
safety codes. In addition the funds
may be used to make the modifications necessary comply with the Americans
with Disabilities Act of 1990 and section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of
1973. Funds may also be used for
asbestos abatement or removal. The McAllen Independent School
District wants to ensure that parents, educators, and other interested
community members have an opportunity to provide comments on the possible use
of funds for this project. Please

Bus Drivers to be Recognized for their Performance and Dedication The
Texas Association of School Boards has awarded McAllen ISD $2,000 to be used
to set up a bus driver recognition program in the Transportation
Department. The program aims to
recognize bus drivers for their performance and dedication to their
profession and to motivate them to continue to perform their duties
safely. “It is a program of positive
reinforcement that we hope will keep vehicle accidents down, lower claims and
claims costs associated with the accidents, conpensation benefits, fleet
insurance, vehicle repairs, downtime, litigation, and training,” says Andy
Silva, Safety Loss Control Specialist for McAllen ISD. Important
