1973 McHi graduate Catherine Hardwicke has been awarded the 2003 Director's Award at the Sundance Film Festival, held January 2003 in Utah. The award was given for Catherine's work in her directorial debut, the movie Thirteen, starring Holly Hunter. To read an online review of the film, click here. Catherine also wrote the screenplay for Thirteen, which opened in August 2003 to excellent reviews.
Catherine has been a production designer and assistant director on many other films. After graduating from McHi in 1973, Catherine earned a degree in architecture at the University of Texas at Austin, and she returned to South Texas, where she designed and built homes and office buildings. She later attended the prestigious UCLA Graduate School of Film and began her career as a production designer in 1987.
Catherine has also designed a special gazebo structure and sculptures ("La Brea Gateway") in Hollywood at the corner of Hollywood Blvd. & La Brea Ave. The work of art pays homage to legendary women in film. Click here to see a picture of this structure.

Hardwicke received a CableACE nomination for Billy Crystal's "Sessions," the Joseph Jefferson Nomination for John Cusack's theater production of "Alagazam," and the Nissan Focus Award and Disney Card Walker Animation Award for her student film "Puppy Does the Gumbo."
A graduate of UCLA, Hardwicke began her career as an architect in South Texas where she designed and built homes, townhouses and office buildings.
