POSITIVE ACTION PROGRAMS
Positive Action Program
This is our eighth year to continue our Positive Action Programs. We will provide a positive learning environment for our students at Milam. We will continue operating our post office and printing a student newspaper which will encourage writing, reading and building community and student self-esteem. Schoolwide encouragement of student respect, responsiblity, honesty, friendship, appreciation, loyalty and cooperation and incorporation of the social skills from project RESSPECT with our positive action program. Students are held responsible for their own good behavior as well as high academics. Conflict resolution will continue to be implemented to teach students resolution skills.
Students are recognized daily for exemplary behavior such as good manners, waiting patiently in line, and kindness to one another with lotto tickets awarded by all staff members. These tickets are used in a weekly lotto drawing and winners are allowed to choose a prize.
Just as good behavior is rewarded, unacceptable behavior has consequences. Each teacher has their own set of rules and class expectations. If a student breaks a rule he/she is issued a demerit which is to be signed by the parent. Three demerits equal a detention. Detention is held once a week and is 30 minutes for grades 1-2 and 45 minutes for grades 3-5. If a student is sent to the office for a serious infracture, detention or suspension may be issued as a direct consequence. A copy of this referal is sent to the parent.
Positive behavior is encouraged and two social skills based on our empowering statement are stressed per month.
