Language arts teachers participate in the New Jersey Writing 3 summer week institute.

What's wrong with using the TEKS as a district curriculum? Why aren't the TEKS sufficient? What are some processes for developing, and implementing district-specific curriculum within the TEKS framework? Which curriculum documents need to be developed for teachers to use? These topics were addressed during Dr. Crain's boot camp campus leadership teams.

This institute was designed for high school teachers that wanted to learn the SIOP Model and its effectiveness in assisting educators in serving English Language Learners.

Participants studied and discussed issues concerning the implementation of the READ 180 Program.

Administrators were presented with a review of program components, discussion/sharing of campus plans of action for implementation, scheduling of coordinators meetings, and distribution of set of training materials.

Participants received an overview of the Harcourt Core Reading Program.

The presenter addressed the nature of the gifted learner that presents academic and affective needs that must be addressed in the GT Program.

Participants viewed the Reading Initiative Webcast regarding TPRI/Tejas LEE.

New teacher orientation for all new MISD professional staff was held on August 4, 2006. New teachers were introduced to district personnel, received a personnel/employee benefit overview and secured information from the various district department stations.

MISD general assembly was held on August 9, 2006. Keynote speaker for the event was Dr. Charles Petty. Theme for the year "Caring, Connecting, Creating a Better Future!"

Professional Development & Appraisal System training is a required training for all new teachers. The following topics were addressed:

  • Explanation of the rules
  • Explanation of the domains
  • Explanation of the Teacher Self-Report form
  • An explanation of the scoring procedures

Participants were trained in new purchasing procedures for the school year.

A training for PTA officers from each campus was held on August 26, 2006.

Participants addressed the word walls and science collaborative.

A team building workshop for all principals and central office staff was held on September 6, 2006. Strategies for improving communication with staff, peers, and parents were presented.

Teachers were trained in procedures and lessons to use with star lab. Teachers must be trained in order to check out star lab during the year.

IDEA staff development committee members work diligently to create drafts of the 2007-2008 school calendar for voting purposes.

Participants were provided strategies from a curriculum that is based on hands-on activities and is TEKS/TAKS correlated.

Region One assigned team of "5" to McAllen ISD provided day one of campus leadership team training focusing on:

  1. Overview of Systemic Curriculum Model
  2. Vertical Alignment Documents

Elementary principals received training on techniques for crisis prevention and restraining.

Participants reviewed the 2006 test item analysis, looked at weak areas, and worked on a plan of action to improve science TAKS scores.

Classroom management training is designed to assist new teachers to the profession. Areas that were presented to new teachers included space, teacher expectations, atmosphere & relationships, redirection, and taking care of self.

IDEA members were treated to a presentation by the Rowe's "Razz Ma Tazz" Choir.

Secretaries and supervisors were presented strategies focusing on communication, team building and stress management.

Michael Fossum, NASA astronaut and MISD alumni, met with District staff on December 13, 2006 for a Q & A session. Strategies to motivate students in the field of science and mathematics were also discussed.

Participants were provided strategies from a curriculum that is based on hands-on activities and is TEKS/TAKS correlated.

New first grade teachers were trained on 1st Grade TEKS, Scope & Sequence, resources & activities.

Classroom management training is designed to assist new teachers and experienced teachers with strategies to address the topics of space, teacher expectations, atmosphere & relationships, redirection, and taking care of self.

Region One assigned team of "5" to McAllen ISD provided campus administrators training on FAKSONLINE, putting it all together and development of implementation plans.

A parent training conference was held on April 2, 2007. Various topics of interests were presented to parents during breakout sessions.
