General Provisions of Dress and Grooming at Zavala Elem.

1. Student dress shall be neat, clean, properly fitting and reasonably simple.
    Non-examples:
                                   •tight shorts                                   •tight blouses/shirts
                                   •tight pants                                    •tight skirts
                                   •wide leg pants worn at the hips       •extra long pants that drag

2. Revealing clothing such as bare midriffs, crop tops, cut-out backs, halter tops, undershirt cut shirts (tank tops and muscle shirts), unbuttoned or bloused shirts and other items similar to these are unacceptable for school.
    Also included are:
                                  •see through blouses/shirts               •biker shorts with no regular shorts worn on top of them
                                  •spaghetti strap blouses or dresses     •basketball jerseys without a blouse or shirt underneath

3. Footwear shall be worn to school--boots, shoes or sandals; thongs or flip flops shall not be worn to school.

4. Any apparel containing obscene slogans or other emblems or writing that may reasonably be expected to cause disruption of or interference with normal school operations shall not be permitted.
    Included are:
                                  •drug related T-shirts                        •gang related T-shirts
                                  •sexual innuendoes

5. Neatly hemmed Bermuda or walking shorts shall be permitted, provided the length is no shorter than 5 inches above the knee or no shorter than the extended fingertips with the arms held alongside the body. Students in grades Pre-k through 2nd may wear shorts.

6. Hair must be clean and neatly combed and styled in such a manner that is not distracting.
     Non-examples:
                                   •bangs covering eyes                      •use of colored spray

7. Guidelines for dress length shall be no shorter than 5 inches above the knee or no shorter than the extended fingertips with the arms held alongside the body.

8. Students shall wear such foundation garments as may be necessary to be in good taste.

9. Boys may wear mustaches as long as they are neatly groomed; no beards will be permitted.

10. Bandannas, hats and caps are prohibited from being worn inside buildings.  Note:  Students are able to wear a cap outside on the playground. The first time a student is caught wearing a cap inside the building, s/he will be warned. The cap will be picked up and returned at the end of the day. The second offense will result in the cap being picked up and requiring the parent to come by and request the cap.  Otherwise, the cap will not be returned to the child until the end of the semester.

11. No rings, studs or similar ornamentation (ex: earrings) which are designed to be connected to the body by the use of clasps or through pierced openings in the body will be permitted to be worn on the body except on the ears, unless such ornaments are entirely covered by clothing such that such ornamentation is not visible.
            Note:   Earrings are only permitted for  girls.
 

It is the responsibility of the school principal to determine if there is a violation of the dress code.

Students found in violation will be sent home to change clothes and then allowed to return.  If a second violation occurs, students will receive appropriate disciplinary action.
           Note:  Students will call parents and make arrangements for appropriate clothing to be brought to them.
                       •If a student does not have a phone or can't reach his/her parents, s/he may be taken home to change
                       providing there is someone at home.
                       •Students may be asked to turn their inappropriate T-shirts inside out as a quick fix if no one is home or
                        parents can't be reached.
                       •If student's attire can not be corrected due to unforeseen circumstances, the child will be placed in the
                        Principal's office for the entire day.

In situations not specifically covered by the dress code, principals will have full authority to take the necessary steps in correcting those students whose appearance or mode of dress, in the judgment of the principal, is distractive and / or disruptive to the normal operation of the school.
